Article 370,CAA,NRC are long standing talking points for BJP. Natural to be picked up with such a large mandate

Also having a proactive Home Minister is a factor

All of this need not signal a seminal shift in Modi's policy

The West sees all this as the closet Muslim-hater Modi coming out of his closet in his second term - getting emboldened to turn extremist. A Hitler in the making

But Indians who are closer to the discourse know that none of these legislations are "new". They are old topics
Modi is picking them up yes. But that's in part because of the Home minister.

The HM has the energy for combat and controversial legislation that prior HMs likely lacked

This guy is reacting to the term "eternal servitude" in isolation without understanding the specific Shri-Vaishnava context of the sketch
That term would likely have been used by the illustrator even if the subject in question had not been Andal but any of the other dozen male Alwars
For instance one of the 12 Alwars is the illustrious "Vipra Narayana", also known as "Thondaradippodi Alwar"

He was a male brAhmaNa, but his devotion to Vishnu earned him the epithet "Thondaradippodi" which means -

"Dust at the feet of the lord narAyaNa"

This is puerile

Too many people on the H-Right think of "conservative" as a bad word

Much of Dharma stems from an instinct to "conserve". Even its etymology is linked to "sustenance / holding"

Dharmic codes emphasize sustainability as opposed to merely sounding fair/just
Having said that there have always been streaks of radicalism in Indian thought

Radicalism in Religion. In social outlook

Usually these have emerged in opposition to brahminical thinking

But sometimes even within brahminical fold
E.g. Ramanuja's views were somewhat radical relative to the prevailing Vedantic climate of his day.

Though we don't use the term "radical" to describe either him or his sampradAya today

Right to freedom of religion is not quite the same as having a "secular" state

American Constitution (through 1st Amendment) also guarantees right to freedom of religion

Yet America never felt the need to insert the word "secular" in its Constitution
The Introduction of terms like "secularism" as well as "scientific temper" (which features in the "Fundamental Duties" section) in the Indian Constitution in the mid 70s was deliberately mischievous
It was an attempt to mock the religiosity of the Indian people, and create this artificial dichotomy between "science" and "religion"

Basically telling Indians - "hey...you better choose between your faith and the forces of "progressive" science"

Short thread on why I oppose #CAA #NRC.

I am a Hindu, upper caste, Kshatriya, from a feudal background (my dad’s family founded our ‘barho’ - 12 villages - in the 16th century; my mum’s family is Raghuvanshi - yeah hullo Ayodhya! - and even older in the region).
Technically I am not in the firing line, right?

Perhaps not in the first instance.

The government’s own statements on the papers required for #NRC have been contradictory.

But beyond that papers are notoriously unreliable in #India.
I’ve been helping my family liquidate some ancestral property in UP. It’s rural, and yes mostly farmlands although some has now been redesignated as commercial. Other were built upon by the imperial state that GoI inherited.

1/ There are lots of good and vital ethical, moral, and political arguments against the fundamental injustice of the #CAA. This thread lists other arguments and forms of resistance that focus on procedural and institutional challenges.
2/

Writing this so that we remember that our forms of resistance must be as varied and diverse as the forms of exclusion we face. The courage of today's protestors deserves pathways tomorrow to grow and sustain.
3/

In a nutshell: the #CAA constantly seeks to separate from the #NRC. Former is the "Act", latter only an "implementation mechanism." This will make legal challenges focus on CAA and less on NRC which will appear procedural and apolitical.
