We saw some horrors in 2019 that I never thought I'd see on U.S. soil. But despite a career criminal and narcissistic sociopath in the White House, we dodged any new hot wars, a global economic collapse, or a breakdown in U.S. civil society. For that, I'm *deeply* grateful today.
1/ Trump is still a clear and present danger with respect to all three of those ills, but at least there's still a little time left for us to do the right thing and peacefully and lawfully replace our leadership. A Senate trial will determine whether we still have free elections.
2/ If the Senate votes to acquit Trump of what he's confessed to doing—illegally soliciting bribes from foreign governments to get them to interfere with and delegitimize our elections—we'll look back and say that 2012 was America's last fully free and fair presidential election.
3/ There's no other way to look at this—and no other way media should cover any upcoming Senate trial. If Republicans greenlight what Trump has now done at least 3 times, our elections are no longer domestic affairs—but decisions foreign governments are permitted to help us make.
