This play is magic. It's been missing in Tennessee for maybe a decade. A few thoughts on what made this play so special.
Situation: 3rd and 5. Midfield. 1Q. Titans down 7-0.
Pre-snap. Titans motion Brown across the formation to get a 2x2 look. Texans DB22 follows, signaling man. Safety rotates.
The post snap defense looks like this. Man across. Boundary safety takes the post. Field safety is going to play robber. Seeing this rotation pre-snap, Tannehill has to verify post snap that it's man, a blitz isn't coming (post safety signal), and if no blitz find the robber.
Here's what we see immediately post snap. The thing to watch here is AJB. He's consistently so violent with his initial stem. Look how hard he presses to the corner. No waste, and doesn't tip his hand until he's on his toes. He's then sudden in his break, creating separation.
AJB gets into his break, but the field safety has dropped down to rob the route. In past seasons, this is where the play dies.

Here, Tannehill sees there is another window on the backside of the safety and scrambles to find it.
He breaks the pocket and looks to find AJ. This throw looks routine here, but it is not. There's a defender in Tannehill's face, and a corner on AJ's hip. The throw is 20 yards, on a rope, and is perfectly placed. AJ never breaks stride.
This is the final component that's been missing. Turning a big play into an explosive one. AJ Brown is special in his ability to make these sorts of plays. Davis deserves a ton of credit for turning this into a TD with an outstanding block.
It's so simple, but the best offenses are also the most explosive. And, for years, the Titans have relied on engineered shot plays for big yardage. Plays like the one above are one of the primary reasons this offense has become one of the best in the NFL.
