So you want to work in sports? My advice on your search to break into the #sportsbiz: If you can, BE FLEXIBLE.

Be flexible with...

Where you are willing to live.

Which organization you are willing to work for.

What your responsibilities are.

What the compensation is.

1/
Be flexible with where you are willing to live:

The #sportsbiz is super competitive, w/ thousands of grads each year looking to get in. If you take locations off the table, you are making it even more challenging to find an opportunity...

2/
Great jobs are open all over the country, in some areas that you might never have imagined living. If you are able, don’t limit yourself. And there might not be a better time to move around the country than right after you graduate.

3/
Be flexible with which organization you are willing to work for.

There are A LOT of ways to get involved in sports: colleges, pros, minors, agencies, companies, start-ups and so on... Great opportunities exist at all levels of sport.

4/
And starting in a particular league or conference or area doesn’t prevent you from transitioning to another later. The skills you will learn can translate well to other areas and help you down the line.

5/
Be flexible with what your responsibilities are.

You see a job posted but there are some responsibilities that you aren’t as familiar with. Don’t be deterred. Look at it as a great opportunity to learn something new and make yourself a more marketable person in the future...

6/
Sometimes getting your foot-in-the-door with an organization can set you up to move around internally later to something you would want to focus on more.

7/
Be flexible with the compensation you are looking for.

Everyone would love to have a full-time opportunity when they graduate, but those entry level positions are competitive. If you can swing it financially, don’t discount the value of internships/part-time/hourly jobs...

8/
Work hard, gain experience and a lot of times it can lead to full-time opportunities in the future.

9/
Just sharing some opinions about the industry on a Sunday night.

What advice do you have for people searching for their opportunity in the #sportsbiz?
