[PiVR 1/9]: Our recent preprint (doi.org/10.1101/2019.1…) presents PiVR by @DavidTadres, an affordable and easy to build open-source tool to present small animals with virtual realities to characterize behavior and its neural underpinnings.
[PiVR 2/9]: PiVR stands for Raspberry Pi Virtual Reality system (pivr.org). The philosophy behind this open source tool has been inspired by the amazing FlyPi @NeuroFishh
(journals.plos.org/plosbiology/ar…) and Ethoscopes @giorgiogilestro
(journals.plos.org/plosbiology/ar…).
@NeuroFishh @giorgiogilestro [PiVR 3/9]: To create virtual realities, PiVR tracks a freely-moving animal (e.g., adult flies, larvae, zebrafish, a spider and fireflies) in real time at 50Hz and presents predefined light stimulation patterns based on the position of the animal.
@NeuroFishh @giorgiogilestro [PiVR 4/9]: PiVR applied to Drosophila larvae. We illustrate the use of PiVR by presenting larvae with virtual-odor realities and by comparing their behavior to real odor, as was previously done in elifesciences.org/articles/06694
@NeuroFishh @giorgiogilestro [PiVR 5/9]: PiVR applied to Drosophila adults. Flies were immersed in virtual bitter-tastant realities. We find that flies avoid regions where they taste bitter by decreasing their running speed upon sensory relief.
@NeuroFishh @giorgiogilestro [PiVR 6/9]: PiVR applied to zebrafish. Fish larvae were immersed in a virtual light gradient. We find that zebrafish are able to stay close to this virtual light source by integrating the absolute light intensity and recent changes in light intensity.
[PiVR 7/9]: Our results nicely complement a recent and in-depth study of the mechanisms directing phototaxis in zebrafish by Debrégeas and coworkers: elifesciences.org/articles/52882
[PiVR 8/9]: PiVR is also capable of presenting dynamic (non-stationary/time-varying) virtual realities, such as an odor plume. Plume structure courtesy of the Nagel lab (NYU): elifesciences.org/articles/37815
[PiVR 9/9]: If you would like to know more about PiVR, please make sure to check out the website pivr.org, which includes detailed instructions on how to build and operate your own setup. Have fun!
