The judge at Harvey Weinstein’s sexual assault trial ordered jury selection to begin as scheduled Tuesday, rejecting a defense request for a “cooling-off period.”

On Monday, a group of Weinstein's accusers spoke outside the Manhattan courthouse where he will face charges of rape and sexual assault against two women.

"As we stand here at the beginning of a new year and a new decade, time's up," actor Rosanna Arquette said.
The trial comes two years after The New York Times and The New Yorker published accounts of how Weinstein allegedly mistreated women for decades.

The allegations became a rallying point of the #MeToo movement in October 2017...
...when actor Alyssa Milano urged anyone who had ever been sexually harassed or assaulted to reply “me too” to a tweet.

But Milano was not the first person to use the phrase.
Activist Tarana Burke coined “Me Too” to advocate for victims of sexual violence 11 years earlier.

The phrase came to Burke after hearing a 13-year-old survivor share her story. In 2006, Burke founded the nonprofit Just Be Inc., using “Me Too” as the name of its movement.
Over 80 women have come forward against Weinstein so far.

Dozens more men in the entertainment and media industry — including Louis C.K, Les Moonves, Bill Cosby and Morgan Freeman — have answered to claims of sexual harassment or assault. to.pbs.org/2QSFDVT
Burke has been critical of the movement focusing on powerful men in Hollywood and the mostly white female celebrities who have accused them of sexual assault and misconduct, while minority voices have gone unnoticed.

"The origins of #MeToo are rooted deep in the most marginalized communities, in school cafeterias and church basements that provided safe spaces for black and brown girls forgotten and dismissed by those who had resources to help them," Burke said in 2017. to.pbs.org/39OydMf
Weinstein has pleaded not guilty and said his sexual relationships have all been consensual.

The judge denied prosecutors' request to revoke his bail & jail him until the trial is over. If he’s convicted of the most serious crime against him, he faces a mandatory life sentence
