When I started designing Theros Beyond Death, I already knew that we'd be seeing a lot more of the Underworld than we had in our previous visit to Theros. #MTGTHB #WOTCstaff 1/8
I got really excited about the titans from Greek mythology. These are the primordial ur-gods who created the universe and gave birth to the current crop of gods. Cronos, Oceanus, Hyperion, etc. The gods imprisoned the titans in the Underworld when they rose to power. 2/8 
In Magic, we use the Elder creature type to represent huge primordial entities. We always pair it with another creature type. 3/8
We'd named a couple of cards Titans in the original Theros block. They both have creature type Giant. 4/8
But the most iconic titans in Magic are the cycle from Magic 2011, each of which features and ability that triggers when the titan enters the battlefield or attacks. These have been tournament staples from Day One. 5/8

During vision design, I knew we wanted to have Elders Titans. I knew they should have the creature types Elder Giant, and I knew they should have the "titan trigger" from M11. 7/8
Later, the Set Design team designed the Escape mechanic. This was obviously a perfect fit for the Elder Titans. One more line of text to really encourage you to use the Escape mechanic, et voilà! 8/8
