When people tell you their problems, they often tell you bandaid problems: problems which can be solved using bandaid solutions.

When one of their mental patterns is part of the root cause, they will not mention their real problem.

This is a rational behavior.

If the problematic mental pattern of theirs was perceived as net negative, they would already have abandoned it.

If they keep holding onto it, it must be because it is subjectively considered as net positive, on the basis of past personal emotional experiences.

It makes then sense for the brain to hide the real problem, for solving it would mean abandoning a behavior which is considered net positive.

Why would the brain do something this irrational?

[3/4]
Of course the key here is subjectivity. The part of the brain which gates decision making only cares about what has been experienced emotionally. Whether the analytical mind knows that the mental pattern is net negative does not matter a bit.
