Jacob Wohl was released on his own recognizance after agreeing he wouldn’t leave CA w/o permission of the Court. I checked the docket and I don’t see any filings where he req’d leave to travel. If anyone has anything on him being outside CA after *9/4/19,* drop it here pls.✌🏼🤓
Jacob Wohl’s dad is listed as his legal counsel, btw. Jacob has arraignment coming up, so anything the Riverside Co D.A. may want to know, drop it here. 😉

This week saw a one-two punch to local news: the GannettHouse merger and news that McClatchy is in serious financial trouble. @Sulliview captures the worry quite well here (washingtonpost.com/lifestyle/styl…).

But after Newsgeist, I wanted to share a different take on this. A thread below.
(2/) I’ve been centering on this for a while, but listening to local news leaders and entrepreneurs talk about what they're doing has crystalized my sense that when we talk about saving local news, the real problem is that we are trying to save it at scale.
(3/) Scale is the enemy of all our perceived fixes to what ails the news. Economic troubles, problems with context, problems serving underrepresented groups, problems with newsroom diversity.

I will get at why in a bit, but first I want to talk about statistics.

Just spent morning sitting in audience of arraignments w/ someone interesting in learning more. Always amazes me how much injustice, waste, irrationality gets lost for the initiated. Court may be “public,” but the speed, language, & lack of context in court keeps so much secret.
Some things you can clearly see. Shackles. Race disparities. Sea of officers. Retinas being scanned. Nervousness of those before judge. Today an older man who almost threw up. Relieved chuckles of court reporter when he didn’t. All taking place beneath “In God We Trust.”
Some things you can hear. The unnecessary severity & coldness of the judge. The remarkably high amounts of bail quickly requested & set ($5k / $10k / $100k) despite the obvious: they couldnt afford $10. People asking to speak only to be shut down by judge. “Ask your lawyer.”

💥BREAKING NEWS💥Paul Whelan was discharged from the Marines because he submitted HIMSELF for various awards -Legion of Merit, Meritorious Service Medal🎖etc via the online awards system of the Commanding General of the Third Marine Aircraft Wing.
💥BOOM💥Whelan’s attempts to fraudulently secure awards for himself through a system he had admin access to, was caught when the poorly written forms were flagged by the Commanding General’s staff.
🔥Paul Whelan also falsified orders so he would not have to return to his primary unit in Michigan and he could stay at Miramar. He was also drawing BAH and Commuted Rations pay while living in an apartment in LaJolla when he lacked orders that he was stationed there🔥

A young woman trying to get childcare assistance, so she can work, is violently arrested, her baby literally ripped from her arms by police, at an NYC SNAP office.

She's now in jail on bail she can't afford, charged w/ harming her own baby.

The alleged offense? The mother was sitting on the ground with her baby because the office was crowded and slow. She wasn't blocking anything or disturbing anyone. She was just quietly waiting her turn. She was no doubt exhausted. She works as a cleaner & has a baby.
The underlying offense here is trespass - b/c she was asked to leave the benefits office & refused, which is why the cops were called. There was no reason for staff to ask her to leave. She had a baby. They could have let her sit there or found her a chair.
