Compare These 20 Headlines To See How Differently Royal Reporters Treated Kate Middleton And Meghan Markle: buzzfeednews.com/article/elliev…
THREAD: I've been reading about / covering the royal family for years + I've been thinking about publishing a piece like this for a while now. I'm not exaggerating when I say that I've read thousands of headlines/stories about the royals, particularly about Kate, over the years.
When Meghan came on the scene, I noticed a bit of a slow shift in terms of stories that were written. Don't get me wrong. There have been "why is this a story" stories written about Kate — TONS of them, but they were always fluffier? Silly, maybe. But not obviously negative.
Actually, let me back up a second, because one of the things that many people cite when you start talking about press coverage of Meghan is "Well! Everybody were mean to Kate too! This is just what happens!"

And yeah! Kate got shit in the press too. But it was different.
I am NOT saying that anything justifies the years of bullshit Kate got from the press. Because it was bad. It was classist. It cast judgment. It was invasive.
If you want to talk about privacy invasions — shit, Kate's phone was hacked by a "royal reporter" 100+ times. A government committee told the Press Complaints Commission that they fucked up by letting paparazzi harass her.
(News is happening and I have a doctor’s appt at 1pm so stay tuned, this thread will be continued)
(Okay, I have written three stories today and I am back, so let's get to it.)
(Also, shoutout to the gentleman who emailed me about my "filthy mouth" and "accursed feminist point." It is with great regret that I must inform him and you, dear reader, that I may continue to use profanity in appropriate instances as I continue my thread.)
Okay, so I want to make one thing very clear — Kate was treated horribly by the press for a very long time. And William, like Harry with Meghan, tried to protect her.
But once she was engaged to William it was very clear that she was under a royal arm of protection. To the extent of meetings with the press at Buckingham Palace laying down the law.

Which is UNDERSTANDABLE. The last woman in her position was Princess Diana.
(I’m going to continue/finish this thread today, to be clear!)
(Also, y'all, I'm working on another story right now but need to point out that people saying I'm anti-Kate / anti-monarchy — a simple google or twitter search will make it, uh, abundantly clear that I am not. My eagerness to report on the royals is a long-running joke at BF.)
