I know many of my followers are both Australian academics and also horrified at what climate change is doing to our beautiful country.

Well, here's a thing you can do: write to Uni Super and tell them to divest from fossil fuels.

unisuperdivest.org
I was actually stunned when I learned how dirty Uni Super's invstment portfolio is. At least 10% of the fund’s Australian share investments are in companies actively undermining the climate goals of the Paris Agreement, including Woodside, APA and BHP.
UniSuper itself reports: “Across the fund 12% of our exposure is in companies involved in fossil fuels,” including investments in Santos, Oil Search and Origin Energy. It's an astonishing level of cognitive dissonance characteristic of Australia's disastrous climate complacency
Here are the board members of UniSuper by the way, in case you want to pressure them personally to divest from fossil fuels. The chair is Ian Martin:
UniSuper's boilerplate statement on "Climate risk and our investments" is a good example of the neoliberal double-speak that infects so much of our superannuation sector
On the one hand, UniSuper puts a nice box in their glossy brochure about the Paris agreement
And, supposedly, UniSuper's investment strategy is guided by a "proactive approach to reducing emissions"
But, apparently that doesn't mean much, because UniSuper holds literally billlions of dollars of shares in some of the world's biggest fossil fuel polluters.
The get out clause -- the mealy-mouthed justification for investing in the companies that would not appear to be "environmentally sustainable" at all -- is set out in statements like this:
Translation: we have a climate policy but that won't stop us from investing in things that destroy the climate, because making money is ultimately the only thing that counts.
