I experienced this too. The Weird Internet was an awesome place up until around 2008-10, when the Nazis took over.
What the hell happened? 2008-10 was well after we got broadband, and before cell phones really got popular, so I'm hesitant to blame it on new technology. Why did a wave of Nazis suddenly take over the Weird Internet?
Was it a reaction to Obama? The rise of Facebook? A massive coordinated effort by Nazis to take over?
Maybe the changes in our society (increasing diversity, the decline of Christianity, economic stagnation/inequality) were just always destined to cause a big social fracture, and Weird Internet just happened to be the first place it manifested.

Alternative measures of GDP seem to agree - South Africans are getting poorer.
In fact just eyeballing it, it looks like South Africans actually have lower average standards of living than before the Great Recession. That's beyond "recession", that's a lost decade. What the heck is going on in South Africa??

1/The next book in my "Immigration and Diversity" series is "This Land Is Our Land: An Immigrant's Manifesto", by Suketu Mehta.

2/This "manifesto" is not a very well-organized book. It skips back and forth between personal anecdotes, stories about immigrants, history, data and statistics, etc. It's hard to keep track, and it's hard to make sense of the overall thesis.
3/As best I can describe it, there are three parts to this book:

1) a description of the lived experiences of immigrants,

2) an argument that rich countries should permit "immigration as reparations" for colonialism, and

3) a standard U.S.-specific pro-immigration argument.

daniel borden will be sentenced tomorrow after pleading guilty in may 2018 for his role in the brutal beating of deandre harris on august 12, 2017.
he entered an alford plea for felony malicious wounding - briefly, this means he maintains innocence while admitting he knows the state has sufficient evidence to convict him (because he's, you know, on video committing the crime)

two other men have already been tried, convicted, and sentenced for their participation in this beating. alex ramos & jacob goodwin were convicted in 2018 and will serve 6 & 10 years, respectively.

NOBODY is talking about how the online depression community has been infiltrated by alt-right recruiters deliberately preying on the vulnerable.

There NEED to be public warnings about this. 'Online pals' have attempted to groom me multiple times when at my absolute lowest.
The common railroad stages of 'helpful' linking to 'motivational speakers' goes 'Jordan Peterson ---> Stefan Molyneux ---> Millennial Woes. The first is charismatic and not as harmful, but his persuasiveness leaves people open for the next two, who are frankly evil and dumb.
People in these communities are often drowning in despair and susceptible to corruption by charismatic, lucid evil offering them what seems like the only lifeline. I know nobody reads my tweets, but I hope somebody stumbles on this and second guesses their influences.
