/5: Decorated with winged victories and military trophies, these two capitals at S Lorenzo fuori le mura, #Rome, are among the most unusual #Roman capitals I've seen as #spolia in a #medieval church. #classicstwitter #archaeology #sculpture #LateAntiquity
/5: Pope Pelagius II (579-90), predecessor of Gregory the Great, built the church over St Lawrence's tomb. The pair of figured capitals is deliberately placed nearest the altar; the rest of the colonnade has #Roman Corinthian capitals, also #spolia. #MedievalArt #architecture
/5: In the galleries, two elaborate #Roman Composite capitals and columns with spiral fluting add the same emphasis. Contemporary (6th century) capitals, plinths, and imposts also appear less prominently throughout the basilica. #architecture #LateAntiquity
/5: In the #mosaic, Pelagius II, alongside St Lawrence, presents a model of his church. The lower part was likely "refreshed" when the signed ciborium (1148) was installed. Many #tombs remain from the #EarlyChristian #cemetery which had a 4th c basilica. #medievaltwitter
/5: Pope Honorius III (1216-27) radically transformed the whole complex by building a basilica to the west and joining it to the 6th c church which became a deep raised choir. More on it and its remarkable treasures in days to come... #MedievalArt #architecture #ChristianArt
