Republican counties in Florida continue to use a Jim Crow felony disenfranchisement law to ban many of their constituents from voting while more progressive counties use their discretion to restore voting rights to thousands of people and this could well decide the 2020 election.
If you’re in a more progressive county like Miami-Dade, 90% of people with past felony convictions are eligible (even after fines/fees included) and a process is established to restore your vote. If you’re in a Republican county, Republican officials aren’t letting you do this.
That’s because of legislation Republicans passed restricting implementation of Amendment 4. They did this to themselves, Republican constituents with past convictions should know who’s responsible for disenfranchising them, and GOP officials should be punished at the ballot box.
Everything from the % of people owing fines/fees “within the four corners of the sentencing document” to level of outreach by officials to the process established (or not established) to waive/reduce those fines/fees is different by county and progressive counties are leading.
