So the #Superbowl this year is the @49ers and the Kansas City @Chiefs.

As a former Sports Editor, and as a Native American journalist, I have a few things to say about this #AppropriationBowl.

First, the Chiefs are not honoring Native people. I'll explain in a #Thread.
@49ers @Chiefs I typed 'Kansas City Chiefs' into Twitter Gif's and the offensive image of a man doing the Tomahawk Chop in a headdress is the third image to come up.

Also, did you realize the @Chiefs got their name from a non-Native man who formed a fake Indian Boy Scout tribe, the Mic-O-Say.
@49ers @Chiefs As I wrote in my article: "The creation of the Mic-O-Say by Harold Roe Bartle, a non-Native man with a 25-cigar-a-day habit and a booming voice, was the man behind the catalyst leading to the eventual creation of the name for the Kansas City football team, the @Chiefs."

Here is an analogy in a #thread about what it is like - in one way - to be a Native American.

Imagine you are in a private library. On the far wall, you see two old, large books.

One of the books, decorated & ornate is titled 'Truth' the other is non-descript and has no title.
The beautiful book titled 'Truth' is filled with illustrations, and thousands of authors have helped write it.

The back jacket is filled with amazing and positive reviews.

World leaders applaud the book.

Teachers use the book in schools.

No one says bad things about it.
The untitled book is covered with dust.

It appears as if it has not been opened.

As you look through it, everything is unfamiliar.

Except, you have heard the words from your family. The words are comforting and speak of the values that you hold dear to your heart.

.@AOC is correct that the US government is running (privatized, for-profit) concentration camps for refugees and immigrants.

What is not being emphasized though is this barbaric policy is *bipartisan*. It was going on under Obama, and expanded under Trump

In this article from 2016 (under Obama), a Japanese-American who as a child during WWII was held in a US gov. concentration camp drew direct comparisons to the (for-profit) internment camps for immigrants today.

Hitler and the Nazi party were big admirers of the US government's institutional racism and apartheid. They borrowed tactics from the US, in fact: The concentration camps were partially inspired by the colonial reservation system against Native Americans

Speaking of family separation: for decades—well over a century—the federal government removed Native American children from their homes and sent them to brutal English-only boarding schools, on the principle of “kill the Indian in him, save the man.”

At first, he thought he was on the bus because his mother didn't want him anymore. But then he noticed she was crying.”

At American Indian boarding schools, if kids were caught speaking their native tongues, staff would wash their mouths out with lye soup. Staff cut off kids’ traditional braids—a humiliation. Policy was abusive; other kinds of abuse was common. en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/American_…
