Man I didn't realize the Covington clusterfuck was a year ago. I gotta say that it permanently caused me to revise my trustworthiness-estimate of many media outlets and journalists downward -- sorta a big moment for me in a media-nerdery way.
Covington was also a useful example of how Twitter absolutely radicalizes journalists. Because they are on it, all day every day, watching how their friends respond to every news item in real time -- always emphatically -- that has a profound effect on shaping coverage.
The publication of this, in particular, was a Holy Shit moment. The whole point was to name and shame journos/pundits who acted *correctly* after the long video dropped. (And yes I miss Deadspin dearly and read it daily and want it back -- but still!)

There is something about the whole Edward Gallagher story, just the murder and the pardon and the Fox News bullshit and everything else, that somehow hits me more viscerally in an America-is-broken sense than a bunch of other stories that are objectively a lot more important.
2/ Maybe it's because this is one of those stories where you couldn't really imagine ANY non-Trump president doing it. Other stuff, like evil migrant-detention policies, are more differences in degree than kind.
2/ JFC this minidoc.... it's all just so infuriating. And OTHER poeple are going to get away with horrific war crimes as a result of this.

The numbers are a BIT lower than I would have expected, but any one of us who have been going on about the MILES-WIDE gap between actual minority groups and the elite progressives who speak over them, or for them without their consent, could have predicted this.
2/ I wrote about this in February. On all sorts of controversial issues, progressive elites claiming to hold views to protect or advance the interests of marginalized groups... disagree with the opinion of the majority of members of that group

If you are a white person who uses "Latinx," how do you justify that now that the question has been asked and something like 98% of memebrs of this group do NOT prefer this word? Are there other instances in which you ignore how a group prefers to be spoken of to this extent?

Osita Nwanevu either didn't read Kat's article closely, or is simply lying about it. There is no way to read the grafs in question and suggest that she was listing "other supposed casualties of cancel culture."

Can't stand this bad-faith stuff. It's everywhere.
2/ She describes them as "controversies of varying reach," and then in the very next sentence explains that the actual core readership is tired of this stuff and not offended She's obviously not treating anyone involved as 'casualties.'
3/ I didn't think Nwanevu treated my own work quite as unfairly as he treated Kat's, but there's the same general level of general bullshittery and lack of engagement with the specifics of what I actually wrote:

To debate Inquiry's finding of genocide is to actively undermine the legitimacy of the Inquiry. Most Canadians won't read whole Inquiry report and, as journalists, u have power to make ethical choices: to comment on substantive nature of findings or fuel clickbait controversy
It is undebatable that Inquiry finds Canada in violation of SEVEN international human rights instruments; violation of Charter; violation of treaty obligations; violation of inherent Indigenous rights; violation of domestic human rights Codes. Why not name and emphasize that?
