Remember when Berman recused himself from the Cohen hush money case? Dep US Attorney Robert Khuzami took it on until he resigned shortly after Barr was confirmed. 4 months after Khuzami left, the hush money case, along with SDNY's investigation into Trump org, was shut down.

Less than 3 months later on Oct 2, SDNY filed DoJ's challenge to the grand jury subpoena in the Manhattan DA's Mazars case. It was a move designed to aid Trump. It failed - jurisdiction was not handed over to SDNY. (The case is now with SCOTUS)

Also on Oct 2, Trump signed a request to allow John Dowd to represent Lev Parnas and Igor Fruman though neither needed legal representation at the time. But they did a week later when they were arrested by SDNY, the same day Barr dropped by for a "check-in visit".

Thread: Why did Berman recuse himself from the Michael Cohen case and not from the Parnas case?

First, let’s meet Geoffrey Berman, US Attorney for SDNY.

He gave $5400 to Trump’s 2016 campaign, served on the Trump transition team, and used to be law partners with Giuliani.
After Trump fired @PreetBharara in 2017, Berman was appointed Acting US Attorney for SDNY by Jeff Sessions in January 2018. He was never confirmed by the Senate so, pursuant to the applicable statute, the judges of SDNY appointed him US Attorney in April 2018.
In early 2018, Mueller referred the Cohen hush money case to SDNY, and they raided Cohen on April 9, 2018.

But a funny thing happened before the raid: Berman recused himself from the investigation and turned it over to his deputy, Robert Khuzami.

Once you've read it, consider the following:
650,000 missing HRC emails were given to the Southern District of New York (SDNY) by Weiner's lawyer for leniency in his underage sexting case. Remember, this was Weiner's "insurance policy" laptop file and he was cashing it in.
SDNY then proceeded to bury the emails and end talk of investigation on orders from Loretta Lynch. I'm guessing SDNY promptly deleted these emails (more on that later)

The phone conversation between Trump and Cohen took place around Sept 6, and was clearly CAMPAIGN RELATED. (h/t to Philip Bump, WaPo). #cohen
1/ Pecker (the “David” on the tape) has already paid $150K to Macdougal to get the rights to her story, which he will then bury. (In journalism, it’s called “catch and kill.”)
2/ Trump and Cohen agree that it’s important for Trump to BUY the story from Pecker.
