Monday's #hailstorm was catastrophic for #Canberra's #birds. See this thread for some stories, both good and bad, about some of the birds that came into our care.
Carer Helen reports: "The storm hit and the phone went crazy. Vets were inundated with animals - one had to euthanise 38 in a row and sent us the remaining 12. We received maybe 60 birds."
Volunteer Paula continues: "ACT Wildlife's carers were so amazing, taking on as many as they could. Volunteers drove boxes of birds to carers for us. We finished at about 9.30pm. After dropping off to carers I got home at 11.30pm. It was a BIG day."
Rescuer Lisa takes us back to Monday afternoon: "I was tasked to find a #TawnyFrogmouth Owl at Griffith Oval. I found him hidden underneath a parked car - dread to think what would have happened when the car owner returned."
Carer Helen: "The owl came to me, I did an assessment - clear eyes, good feet, wings felt OK. But when placed in the aviary, the wing dropped. Took to vet - broken bones in the shoulder. Sadly he had to be put down."
Carer Sara takes up the story: "These rescued parrots are concussed."
Carer Sara: "This #cockatoo has a black eye."
Carer Sara: "This wood #duck has injuries to legs and body, but the prognosis is good."
