The Mississippi Governor who created Parchman prison said he made it to run as an “efficient slave plantation.” The most in-depth account of its conditions is a book named “Worse than Slavery.” It was designed to exacerbate black enslavement, as we’re seeing with each news story.
They literally took a barbaric institution and then repackaged it to operate within a fixed, tiny cell wall with no possibility of oversight/outside observation. The whole enterprise must be shut down.

The Founders were so opposed to a lawless tyrannical executive that they created a ridiculously anti-democratic institution called the Senate and required an impossibly high 2/3rds vote to remove a president for lawless conduct. Brilliant design for our Constitutonal Republic.
And remember, the Senate was originally designed to have state legislatures choose the Senators. So almost completely unaccountable to the voters. And Republicans control most of the state legislatures.
And the Founders also made the US Constitution one of the most difficult constitutions to amend in the entire world. And the one provision that *can’t* be amended (at least not without a unanimous vote)? The anti-democratic structure of the Senate. Massive structural deficiency.

The national murder rate is 5.0 per 100,000 people. Between 2013-2019, St. Louis police have killed black men at a rate of 7.0 per 100,000. Oklahoma City police have killed black men at a rate of 8.5 per 100,000.
A Black man in St. Louis or Oklahoma City is more likely to be killed by a police officer than the average American is to be killed by anyone, civilian or police.

The Trump administration has indicated they’re going to implement a travel ban against Nigeria, Eritrea, Sudan and Tanzania - which are among the fastest growing black nations in world. They have offered no explanation for this, other than their racism. thehill.com/homenews/admin…
Nigeria is the largest black nation and where the most African immigrants to US come from. Trump doesn’t want black immigration so he’s banning Nigeria. Tanzania is projected to be 9th most populous nation in the world by the end of the century. They added it to the list, too.
They are very explicit that they don’t want black people to come to America. Period. And many of those who’ve died in ICE custody over the past months have also been black. Trump’s immigration policy is killing black people in order to keep America as white as possible.

As we're talking about #Parchman, let's discuss the history of the prison and the current conditions. There are no good prisons, AND Parchman has a very specific history. That history is important, as is understanding the bedrock of the Mississippi prison system specifically
Parchman was started as a massively profitable convict leasing enterprise at the dawn of the 20th Century. This has been covered in the book Worse Than Slavery (discussed here by the NYT) nytimes.com/1996/04/28/boo…
Parchman was founded in 1901 as a *reform* to improve the convict leasing system at the time. In 1918 the prison had a *net revenue of 825,000* (or approximately an $800 profit per prisoner. $825,000 was a lot of money in 1918. pbs.org/newshour/arts/…
