Looking for ways to bring discussions of #racism in your #science classes? Some ideas I use in class & in talks e.g. genome-wide sequencing studies, databases are skewed. Must be accounted for when extrapolating these data (e.g. personalized medicine) nature.com/news/genomics-… 1/n
Especially when those findings are used to develop decision #algorithms otherwise #racism gets "baked in" #ArtificialIntelligence is not neutral. Healthcare outcomes reflect societal racism nature.com/articles/d4158…

a female sales person ... was having difficulty finding a nanny. He yelled loudly at her, in front of a large group of employees,“It’s a f------ baby! All it does is eat and s---! It doesn’t know the difference between you and anyone else! washingtonpost.com/graphics/2020/…
“All you need is some black who doesn’t even have to speak English to rescue it from a burning building!”

#racism and #sexism in one quote by @MikeBloomberg

“He said to a newly-hired female Company sales person, ‘If [the clients] told you to lay down and strip naked so they could f--- you, would you do that too?’ He repeated similar words or substance at frequent intervals”

A thread on #sexism
I was waiting for the euphoria of #DelhiAssemblyElections2020 to reduce to post this. I am looking out for a job, it is no secret. But, responses to my applications are very less, I don't know why. But a recent one was blatantly sexist. 1/n
This is a #bangalorestartup, a #fintech working with banks. Got the founder's number through a good friend, he has been sending me a few leads. I got in touch with the founder (let us call this company X) of X. He asked me to email my resume, which I did. 2/n
Post that, I got a call from his #HR representative, after asking me basic details she asked me a few sexist questions. How many children I have? How old are they? Do they go to school? Who will manage them while I am away? Do I have adequate support to manage them? #Sexism 3/n

Want to feel silenced, patronised and dismissed more than ever? No worries, just get #pregnant, give #birth and become a #mother. This is why I’m more convinced than ever that we need #feminism. A thread - admittedly of mostly first world problems but still…
As a professional woman operating in a western capitalist society I have felt my share of #sexism. Despite my relative power of conviction and ability to speak up for myself I am not immune to the… let’s say somewhat unfriendly conditions that most women have to deal with.
I thought that I knew what everyday casual and systemic #sexism was until I got pregnant, gave birth and became a mother. Bad shit after that tends to become much more pronounced. There are of course exceptions - but surprisingly I come across more assholes now.

A reminder folks: Many are increasingly rejecting the #manel -- an all-male panel -- as outdated, inappropriate, and contrary to the pursuit of intellectual knowledge. It is, simply put, far too narrow.

Everyone involved has power to end it.

I'm old. I remember this stuff.

How It Used To Be

It took three minutes for the TV to warm up.

Nobody owned a purebred dog.
A quarter was a decent allowance & made with real silver.

You'd reach into a muddy gutter for a penny - made with real copper. (I still do...giggle).
Your Mom wore stockings that came in two pieces - one for each leg.

You got your windshield cleaned, oil checked & gas pumped, without asking, all for free, every time.

You didn't pay for air & you got trading stamps, too.
Laundry detergent had free glasses, dishes or towels hidden inside the box.

And don't forget Crackerjacks! A prize in every box.

Teachers threatened to keep kids back a grade if they failed...and they did it.

When a 57 Chevy was everyone's dream car.

People "went steady."

Folks - Let's talk about race, privilege, identity, and what constitutes a legitimate claim to knowledge in the study of Indian history. THREAD #AcademicChatter #AcademicTwitter #history #India
I've been accused in the last day or so of being a white women talking about Indian history. This mistakes a key point: My authority to speak about specific aspects of the Indian past does not rest on the color of my skin or on my gender.
I speak about Indian history as a trained scholar. We've been over this ad nauseam - I read Sanskrit, Indo-Persian, Braj Bhasha, Hindi & Urdu. I hold a PhD in South Asian Studies. I'm an Assistant Professor of History at a research university. I publish peer-reviewed scholarship.

1/ #Racism- and #Sexism-by-Proxy … a thread:

A while back, my usually-progressive son said it was wrong to give children 'black' names like LaShawn or LaTonya.

"There's so much racism," he said. "Their resumes and other applications will be rejected because of their names."
2/ I said this was a classic example of racism-by-proxy: "I'M not racist, but OTHER PEOPLE are … and we should all cater to them."

"But I'm just being realistic!" he countered. "Racists won't change, so black parents should give their kids race-neutral names."
3/ I said racists won't change if we never challenge their racism.

"If we accept racism as an immutable fact and act as if we must all adapt our lives to fit their biases," I said, "we help perpetuate racism. We practice racism-by-proxy."

In my neighbourhood there was a serial sex predator breaking into women's homes and sexually assaulting them in their own beds. It's bad enough that women routinely have to take more precautions than men to do basic things like go for a walk or a jog. 1/ #sexualassault #crime
I can't describe to you what it's like to be afraid to do something as necessary as falling asleep in your own bed at night. This is what happened to many women in my neighbourhood. 2/ #VAW
At the time this was going on, a lot of women talked to me about their fear, about being afraid in their own homes, being unable to fall asleep or stay asleep in their own beds. There were a lot of exhausted women in my neighbourhood. 3/ #crime #fear

TW. Abuse, child abuse, ableism, 'discipline'

This is the last (part 6) of my live-tweet threads about To Train Up a Child by Michael and Debi Pearl, also talking openly about my own experience.

Mute if appropriate.
At the end of my last thread, I said a few things that I want to clarify first up.

I said that I never wanted the family to be separated as if staying together is the goal. That was quite a selfish way of speaking.

F*ck! When does it end? ER doctors (like Toronto’s Marko Duic) not hiring women physicians for 16 years (!!) gender bias in funding, universities undervalue, underpay female academics, women get pushed out of STEMs, add in racism, sexism.... #cdnpse #WomenInSTEM
let's not forget Twitter is toxic for women. Report by @Amnesty confirmed what EVERY woman knows already. There is an abusive tweet every 30 seconds and Black women are 84% MORE likely to be targets of abusive tweets. bloomberg.com/news/articles/…
It gets worse: "Racialized women had highest unemployment rate at 10%... women of colour, are more likely to be concentrated in low-wage jobs. Racialized women were 25% more likely to be working in occupations in the bottom half of the income distribution" thestar.com/news/canada/20…

I struggle to imagine who Bernie Sanders' voting base is. In 2016 he was the anti-Hillary white guy, he got non-stop positive press, was never vetted, and he still lost in a landslide of 4M votes.

In the years since the 2016 election, what are Sanders' accomplishments?
1/
Sanders has written two books about 2016 and passed zero legislation.
Conversely, Kirsten Gillibrand and Kamala Harris have been working on some of the most critical issues for women, families, workers, immigrants and others.
2/
Elizabeth Warren has been working on consumer issues.

All three have led on pushback against Trump. Gillibrand and Warren have the two most progressive voting records in the Senate.

Can we for real make #collectyourcousins a thing? Black folks are constantly collecting their cousins bc 1 black person acting a fool can have far reaching consequences for all of us. White folks don’t seem to feel as implicated by the failures or foolishness of other white folks
I propose #collectyourcousins as a call to allies to come respond to racist (sexist, cissexist, ableist, homophobic) comments by similarly identified people. White women collecting white women. Straight men collecting straight men. Cis folks collecting cis folks.
The appeal of #collectyourcousins in two-fold for me. 1: Privileged folks often respond defensively especially to marginalized folks calling them on such privilege or ignorance. They have a harder time being dismissive of folks with shared identities.

Yes #SmashBrahmanicalPatriarchy and every other kind of patriarchy, misogyny & #sexism regardless of the caste, class, race or religion that habits it. And they all do. But this poster #JackDorsey held was interesting for a number of reasons which I will discuss in this thread.
2/ Firstly, the picture on this poster of a #Dalit woman, reinforces upper-caste, discriminatory, caste stereotypes that holds that the lower caste are dark skinned with Afroid hair & facial features. We all know this untrue. There is no way you can identify caste by color!
3/ In fact it is this kind of stereotype about what Dalit women look like and do, which Jack's poster reinforces, that Dalit women in India have been fighting. #jackinindia

1/8 My favorite #quote by #JosephStalin, which explains the scientific, #DialecticalMaterialist explanation of true freedom in material reality, not just as an abstract ideal. #StalinIsBack #StalinLives #JVStalin #Stalin #StalinQuote #StalinQuotes #Truth #MELS #MarxismLeninism
2/8 Having an #objective, #rational, #ScientificSocialist, #Dialectical, & #Materialist viewpoint allows us to accurately see & evaluate & analyze #Truth & #Reality as they truly materially exist in this universe.
3/8 An idealistic, dogmatic viewpoint, which capitalists have, however, makes one irrational enough to 'see' freedom where freedom stays trapped on a piece of paper while people are oppressed in their actual lived lives.

1. The “Statement on Social Justice and the Gospel” perverts both the gospel and one of its components, social justice.

#Gospel
#SocialJustice
2. The first paragraph of the statement’s introduction asserts there is “an onslaught of dangerous and false teachings that threaten the gospel.” This is error.

The reality is that the gospel is not threatened by lies, and falsehoods pose no danger to it.
3. The statement’s introduction then identifies the culprit as social justice but places the phrase in quotes, allowing the reader to assume that social justice is not a real concern for those seeking to live out the gospel of Jesus.

We were shocked, and it often shocks others, that Amnesty International is in favour of female sexual slavery and sexual exploitation - here is their prostitution policy: scribd.com/doc/202126121/…
'Amnesty International believes that seeking, buying, selling and soliciting paid sex are acts protected from state interference as long as there is no coercion, threats or violence associated with those acts'.
What about financial coercion?
Do Amnesty think the power balance is one of equality? From Dt. Superintendent Sporer 'Several women finally stated that these men had exploited them and had put pressure on them. ..

It is with great displeasure that I present to you all a day in the life of a woman in science. Because, y'know, we're just too distracting to be taken seriously, EVER. 🙃 #sexism
That's a comment in response to the photos of me taken in the feature by @TorontoVerve (if you didn't see the feature, my current avi is one of them, and I've added one to this tweet). This was posted on reddit, you can take a look, here: google.com/amp/s/amp.redd…
It got so bad that a ton of comments were deleted, and users, blocked. So bad that comments are now locked. IN THE ASTRONOMY SUBREDDIT. So if anyone thinks astro is friendlier to women, think again.

1.) Pretty much my entire life I've been asked (primary by white people) the question that I imagine every "asian" person cringes at inside: "Where are you from?" I'm certain the person asking this is completely ignorant to how annoying this question is and why...
