I have two sets of friends who moved to France within a couple of months of the 2016 election.

They were so smart. And seem so much healthier in the head right now than anyone in America.
Like, one family spent last night watching an Irish music concert in Villefranche-sur-Saone last night with wine and friends, and my mouth is agape like I'm staring at something obsolete:

a life.

One of my friends who emigrated is a single mom who sold all her shit and arrived in Paris with her kid and enough for a month of rent (like a few hundred bucks), and is in a 1 room flat.

Gave up a career, teaches ESL.

There is a thing about the version of single motherhood I am living.

Now and then you come across these incredibly dedicated, gentle & kind men who are dads to your kids’ friends or teammates.

They’re easy to spot because they embody quiet, trustworthy masculinity in every act
You watch them play with their sons and daughters, laugh, be present, reach out to their friends’ kids to support them too.

Every single time, it produces in me an uncontrollable wave that is equal parts grief and envy.
So to those men: you have no idea, I’m betting, how much you matter, and how much those of us who don’t have it in our version of family see you.

The rest of us know how lucky your kids are to have you.

One of my favorite military phrases is adapt, improvise and overcome. It’s a succinct way of saying, quitcher bitchin and get the job done. One of the things you learn in the military is that regardless of the odds, you’re expected to prevail. You learn this in a lot of ways.
When they roust you out of bed at 4AM after you’ve gotten four hours of sleep, the expectation is that you will perform up to the standard. You’re tired? So what? That’s no excuse for doing less than your best. Guess what. The enemy doesn’t care if you got no sleep last night.
He’s still going to attack you with ferocity. So, what are you going to do? Wilt? Or stand up to the pressure? There are millions of little lessons like that in the military. The bottom line is, no matter the odds, you must prevail. No matter the pain, you must go on.
