The Humans Of Yaba Left (III)

1. One of the two very old men the Federal Neuropsychiatric Hospital Yaba's male drug wards told us how he once shared a room at Tolani Asuni with a former Minister of the Federal Republic. This happened many, many years ago.

2. This sexagenarian — let’s call him Baba — it was his first admission for rehabilitation and there was this affluent, fairly young Nigerian who was on admission as well.

3. They gisted — this expression is now grammatically permissible, according to Oxford English Dictionary — dined and even slept together. They exchanged contacts, too.

4. Each went his own way after the rehabilitation. Baba has been back twice since, but we didn’t get to find out if the now former Minister returned as well. He named the Minister but don’t ask me; I won’t tell you. 😋😋😋

5. Some years after, the younger fellow was appointed a Minister of the Federal Republic. Baba felt like reaching out to the Minister, but he just couldn’t muster the courage to call.

6. He also contemplated travelling to Abuja to see his minister-friend, but again he couldn’t. Baba was ashamed. “The Minister will just be looking at me like one drug addict he met at Yaba Left,” he told us. “He wouldn’t take me seriously.”

7. Moral of the story: Doing drugs will do you no good. The ‘friends’ you make in the act will not take you seriously. Guess what? You probably will not take yourself seriously either. #TheHumansOfYabaLeft
8. If you’ve never done drugs yet, let nobody lead you astray. Flee as fast as your legs can carry you.

It’s your choice that first time; any other time, the decision has already been taken out of your hands!

THE END
