Up and down the country for the next few weeks local Constituency Labour Parties (CLPs) will be nominating Labour leadership and deputy candidates, just like this one tonight in Beaconsfield. Chair talks about “lots of new faces”. Indeed-180 new members since the election.
Varied opinions in the room about the election result. Standard fare stuff about Brexit and the media but also more nuanced stuff about the weakness of the manifesto and Corbyn’s leadership too (even from some on the left). They all, however, say they want unity now.
As I’ve been reporting throughout this contest, it feels like that deep desire for unity (masking a deep state of fear), makes this v much Starmer’s to lose.
Since I was here

Beaconsfield CLP nominated @Keir_Starmer tonight and @AngelaRayner

Starmer was by a big majority, didn’t even get onto second preferences. Rayner tighter but still clear.
In another part of the country, Dulwich and W Norwood CLP nominated Starmer tonight too. Notable as v left wing (though proEU) but look at the figs I’ve been given from the vote, in final round it’s not even close.
