48 years ago, Ted Heath secured our entry into the EEC with a victory on the floor of the House of Commons. Tonight, Boris Johnson, one of his successors, undoes the only enduring legacy of Heath’s premiership. This is how the lonely Heath celebrated in Downing St that night.
And for those looking at what’s going on in Trafalgar Square and wondering how we celebrated going in, Heath persuaded Herbert Von Karajan and the @BerlinPhil to come to London as part of special series cultural events: “Fanfare for Europe”.
Karajan came as a personal favour to Heath but refused to allow the gala night (attended by the Queen, Judi Dench and Laurence Olivier among others) to be televised. “My heart was full of joy”, Heath wrote.
Heath had some other ideas to celebrate our entry into the EEC. It was suggested the Bayeux Tapestry and show it in Westminster Hall. It was abandoned when it was pointed out that the depiction of the slaughter of lots of Saxons by Normans wasn’t hitting the right note.
