I disagree with a lot of this, but it’s worth a read.
To wit, I don’t believe cloud has to be inherently more expensive at scale—but cost is the wrong lens to view cloud through.

The value is in increasing the speed of innovation. If that doesn’t matter to your company, cloud is probably the wrong answer for you.
If you’re going cloud as a pure cost play, I have some unfortunate news for you: some months are going to suuuuuck.

You have to perceive value beyond saving money on raw infra or there’s no point.

When selecting the right #option to #buy, a #trader has several choices to make. One is whether to purchase an in-the-money (ITM) or out-of-the-money (OTM) option.
While the goal for "#vanilla" #buyers is to have the option be in the money at expiration, the selected option depends on the amount the trader wants to spend and their risk tolerance, as well as their specific expectations for the underlying stock.

Ruth makes this point, rightly, every year.

By this stage, @GiveWell's recs start to look more like a persistent bias or limitation inherent in their model, rather than a credibly objective take on different charities' effectiveness.

Their focus on where a next marginal donor dollar can do the most good is appealing, in theory.

But it presumes that's a useful way to measure effectiveness.

In practice this = heavy bias for simple, linear interventions that perform similarly across diverse environments.
That describes a subset of dev projects that are amenable to linear, quantitative measurement - mostly health-related. The model consistently rewards them.

But plenty of dev projects - indeed most! - aren't linear. Particularly for @GiveWell's other target - poverty alleviation.

1/ There is a unproven myth floating around that during a period of rising rates, real estate investments are going to collapse.

I disagree with this view and here are a few points on why I think this way.
2/ Firstly, there are some examples in history where rising rates hurt property & others where it didn't.

If you study London's dwelling price since the 1950s (this chart since 70s) you'll notice that rising rates in the 60s & 70s (the UK almost went bust) didn't hurt the price.
3/ Actually, the two major crashes for the London property market came in 1990-93 and 2007-09 — and both were during a secular decline in rates.

The one in 1990 was linked to a short term overtightening by the world's central banks which triggered a global industrial recession.

I don't begrudge anyone their meat but when meat proponents start misrepresenting the facts, it gets on my nerves. So here's a short rebuttal thread to animal and GHG prof Frank Mitloehner.
@GHGGuru recently published a white-paper (cekern.ucanr.edu/files/256942.p…) that has already been largely rebutted by another team of scientists jhsph.edu/research/cente….

First, a summary of @VitalikButerin's response: my article is mostly correct, but Vitalik plans to make Eth required for the network to function via rents or via min burned fees. HD-PoS not doable because consensus pricing is hard.
@VitalikButerin thinks economic abstraction can work for end users if min fees can be made required to be paid by the miner's block, not the individual txn.

Lemme break down the thing about being poor that people like Moby don’t seem to get. Let me start with the humble cheeseburger. Because when I was at my poorest, I ate a lot of McDonald’s. Wait, I hear you say- isn’t eating out more expensive? Well...
More expensive than the absolute cost of a cheeseburger and fries you make from scratch at home, with bulk ingredients? Yeah. But more expensive than the cost of all those ingredients put together? No. And that’s the *real* cost, when you are poor.
When you have $5, you do not have the money to buy ground beef, cheese, buns, seasoning, condiments, potatoes, and oil for frying the potatoes. That’s more like...$15-20, assuming you don’t have some staples to start with. And that you’re buying the absolute cheapest options.
