A situation where Trump goes into 2020 with every Republican in the House and Senate united with him *except for Mitt Romney* is like a glee-filled Trumpian dream.
An additional note: two weeks ago, a smart Hill Republican source said they were internally more concerned about Romney breaking ranks than Collins, Murkowski, or Alexander. They had their reasons...
But a particular rationale I've now heard echoed by others is that quite simply, Romney doesn't really want to be a Senator. Since they would be surprised if Romney ran again, making Utah Republicans livid wouldn't matter.
Now, that's far off. But I always thought Romney, executive minded to the core, would deeply dislike the DC legislature experience. A line from Cornyn today, saying Romney "keeps his own counsel", has proven true thus far.
But a Senator who keeps his own counsel isn't much of a Senator. It's a requirement of growing coalitions to get things done. So the question becomes: why is Romney there?
Either way, Utah Republicans are angry, and in the early going, it's partly because they view this as a personal expression without a real point, instead of a bold policy stand that could make a difference.

It will be interesting to watch the response back home.
