BRIDESMAIDS did super well because people hadn't seen a girl bro-comedy before (that was how we conceived of them in the Dark Ages) but BOOKSMART came ten years later and did low numbers. US and MIDSOMMAR were huge, but maybe in 2040, "smart" horror won't be news any more.
The pressure is always on female-led and PoC-led and queer projects to "prove" they deserve to be at the box office by making huge numbers. The spectacle of Lady Ghostbusters is always hanging over everything. But men make a ton of un-trendy, medium-performing movies & it's fine.
If Marvel made a BLACK WIDOW movie in 2013, when everyone was asking them to, it'd be gigantic, but now, after years of waiting and ScarJo tomfoolery, I highly doubt it will be. The solution is to greenlight girl stuff earlier and not make us wait until ten years after the boys.
