I might one day turn this into a paper. But for now, let's look at this really cool part of our history! I am so excited!!

What I will call "devices" are abstract signs, seals... that got progressively more complex by end of #Sasanian era. They are also called #Tamga (or tamgha)
Tamga from Turkish. In Middle Persian and modern Persian, the word would be Nishaan or Neshaan ( Ossetian gakk)

These have an amazing and long history. They might have started as signs for cattle, later for clans & families. Were used by people across Eurasia

THREAD: Reading this thread exhibits scant knowledge of difference between battle standard, State/Empire & religious flags. But that flag you harping about is NOT the Sikh Empire flag but one of the many regimental battle-standards of a multi-cultural multi-faith KHALSA Army! 1/N ImageImageImageImage
There were various battle flags as the Khalsa Army had soldiers from Sikhs, Hindus, Muslims - Pashtuns, Dogras, Pakhtuns, Jats, Kashyap Rajputs, Ramgarhias, Nepalis & many European mercenaries! Not only this, Maharaja Ranjit Singh hired European officers to train & command... 2/N ImageImageImageImage

Academic hat on.

🇬🇧 #Flag THREAD 🇬🇧

We know #flags are powerful symbols of national identity, & we know they have different meanings, for different individuals, & in different countries, largely dependent upon history.

But generally, this a surprisingly under-researched area.
#Flags evoke a very wide range of emotions, including pride, patriotism, egalitarianism & unity. However, we also know they can evoke a sense of national superiority.

They've been widely used as #propaganda, both good & bad.

The Nazis focused on division & national superiority.
I just want to flag up (see what I did there?) some interesting research.

The first is from 2017: 'What Do National Flags Stand for? - An Exploration of Associations Across 11 Countries'

OK so flag thread... amongst the usual suspects of US flags, Gadsden (Don't Tread On Me) flags, TRUMP flags there were Thin Blue Line flags OK not surprising, but hang on what's that green tree on a white background flag...? Well... #CapitolInsurrection #CapitolRiots #CapitolHill
That is the Washington Cruisers flag, or the Appeal to Heaven flag used by the nascent US Navy during the Revolutionary War. Is the person flying it trying to say this is a revolution. #CapitolInsurrection #CapitolRiots #CapitolHill
OK what's next... well as @LalehKhalili observed, we have non-Islamic Republic, Iranian flags (there are many iterations) denoting resistance/moarchist affiliation...
