ORTHOMOLECULAR MEDICINE FREE NEWSLETTER
I seem to remember that ORTHO is Latin for correct; as in the “right” molecule needed for a natural biochemical process to occur.
When the correct molecule, such as a vitamin or mineral is added to the body, the biochemical reaction wherein this molecule participates is caused to progress to the next chemical reaction in a chain of biochemical events that culminates in a natural physiological event.
Zinc is a mineral involved in several dozens of different types of biochemical chains of reactions in the body. Providing the body with an adequate level of zinc fosters healthful outcomes of these reactions.
Vitamin C is a key Orthomolecular substance because it is integral to immune system functions to protect the body from bacterial & viral invasions.
All vertebrate species, excepting humans & an obscure tree shrew, make vitamin C in their bodies. Lack of body manufacture of this vitamin is obviously a mutation that occurred during human evolution.
A 150# human needs about 1 gram (1,000 mg) of vitamin C each day. A glass of orange juice has about 80 mg of vitamin C.
These are some of the reasons that the Orthomolecular Medicine Society is recommending attention to vitamin C in face of the coronavirus threat.
The editorial board of the Orthomolecular Medicine newsletter is comprised of an international panel of Physicians & Pharmacists.
