The worst lesson we could possibly learn right now about ethics and accountability is that if a president personally and flagrantly profits from his office and openly abuses his power on a daily basis, then people will get used to it and start to see it as normal.
Imagine if we learned about everything—the hush-money payments to porn stars, the solicitations of foreign assistance, the personal profiteering, security clearances for his children, the misconduct of his cabinet, and so on—all at once. Our heads would explode.
And by "our," I mean pretty much everyone. There would be so little room for any sane person to deny how dangerous and unbefitting of the office of the president this kind of conduct is.
Instead, what we have now is a cycle in which each monumental scandal that unfolds seems earth-shattering at the moment, but within days or weeks, it's overshadowed by another. Barely anyone can keep up.
Those who are alarmed end up growing fatigued, and the true believers have time to muddy the waters before moving on to the next scandal and the next scandal and the next—each one of which would have defined previous presidencies, but end up a mere blip in the Trump timeline
