Some downbeat thoughts for a Monday morning; around the theme of the UK and its government. Short thread. 1/6
One feature is the pursuit of unconstrained power. I did a thread on that over the weekend. Attacks on the EU, Parliament, the judiciary, the media, the Bank of England, the Human Rights Act etc fit a pattern.

Another is what @fotoole has termed 'trial runs for fascism'. These aim to shift the discourse; to move the moral compass. Think eugenics this weekend. Most of these cats will end up dead... but they will have served their purpose. irishtimes.com/opinion/fintan… 3/6
Linking these two: When discussion is about the return of the death penalty, who will care about restrictions on judicial review? When discussion is about the Scotland/NI bridge, who will care about the cost of HS2? 4/6
Things develop an internal logic. If the aim is to 'take back control', we cannot accept EU rules or demands (haven't they understood that we are leaving?). Never mind that in order to achieve a deal with the EU, we, ahem, have to agree it with the EU. 5/6
I've got as far as identifying what is going on. The next step is to work out how best to oppose it; to convince people that there are dangers associated with unconstrained power, and that the values the vast majority hold dear are under threat. All ideas very welcome... 6/6
