We @bellingcat use a huge amount of user generated content: images and videos shot by normal people. Without this content, we wouldn’t be able to do our work.

However, states are increasingly using internet shutdowns to stop people documenting events. Graphic from @InternetIntel
@bellingcat @InternetIntel @witnessorg have put together a series of guides on how to keep documenting when these kinds of internet shutdowns happen.

@bellingcat @InternetIntel @witnessorg 1. Setting up a smartphone for offline documentation.

In short, if you’re in a country where shutdowns are a possibility, follow these steps now, rather than waiting for it to happen.

@bellingcat @InternetIntel @witnessorg 2. Which app should you use to take pictures and videos? Will it capture metadata that might be valuable for future investigations and prosecutions?

@bellingcat @InternetIntel @witnessorg 3. How to take images and videos that might be useful for future investigations.

If you get a nice sweep of the horizon and say the date and rough location, there’s a very good chance we’ll be able to geolocate it.

@bellingcat @InternetIntel @witnessorg Bear in mind this may mean others may be able to geolocate it too. Be careful about documenting from inside your home.

If I can work out exactly which room you're in, someone from the security services probably can too.
@bellingcat @InternetIntel @witnessorg 4. How to backup and protect your data without internet or computer.

Keep backups. If your phone gets confiscated, it means you won't have lost potentially valuable data.

@bellingcat @InternetIntel @witnessorg 5. How to communicate and share files during this kind of shutdown.

Communication in this kind of situation can be absolutely vital. Know what tools you can use to break through to others.

blog.witness.org/2020/02/file-s…
@bellingcat @InternetIntel @witnessorg Since so much civil society today is organised online, internet shutdowns can effectively remove the public sphere in which civil society operates.

You can be prepared for when this happens. Have a read and spread these articles around to people who might find them useful.
