Lots of revisionist history on stop and frisk in last night’s debate, but here was a big one:

There was never a lawsuit to end NYPD stops and frisks. The litigation aimed to reduce rampant, unconstitutional stops and frisks.

Bloomberg opposed those suits until the bitter end.
After civil liberties groups like @theCCR filed suit, NYPD stops dropped dramatically around the time of trial. The reduction continued after a federal judge appointed a monitor.

Obama’s DOJ expressed support of court monitoring, but Biden overstated his role.

NYPD is still under court monitoring, and the most recent report from December says police are undercounting stops--but they're still decreasing and crime continues to fall.

To anyone familiar with her outstanding work, @NatashaBertrand’s success as a print reporter—that she ably parlayed as a regular broadcast contributor—has to do with her being a scoop machine on a wide range of topics, not any one document she reported on, responsibly.
Not that she needs defending—and without linking to the piece—this passage criticizes her for accurately reporting that intel experts expressed concerns that an IG report disclosed too much about source.

The next graf quotes a top expert in government secrecy saying she’s right.
If a journalist needed one credible source on government secrecy and transparency, the go-to for most who have covered natsec would be Steven Aftergood, who validated her reporting.

That just about says it all.

Attorney @SDonziger swings hard against his criminal contempt case related to his $9.8 billion litigation against Chevron, in a new motion to:

* dismiss the case,
* disqualify SDNY judges, &
* disqualify the private law firm prosecuting him.

@CourthouseNews Richard Gaffey's sentencing is now set for June 29 at 11 a.m.

Of the four indicted Panama Papers defendants, both of the two currently in U.S. custody have pleaded guilty. That averts a high-profile trial slated for next week.

Gaffey admitted to all eight counts.

Last night's debate was an abomination, but our entire debate system is a total disaster that fails to advance ideas while manufacturing controversy and made-for-TV spectacle.

They're hurting our politics and leading to candidates like Donald Trump.

Our debates are professional wrestling. Rehearsed lines and putdowns by actors prepared to gift cable news highlights and ratings-boosting feuds.

There's no emphasis on actual issues, no advancement of ideas, just a big Monday Night RAW-style spectacle that hurts society.
We deserve better than these terrible debates. We deserve substantive discussions, nuanced ideas. And what's more, we NEED those debates, because this flashy, meaningless spectacle has led to a political crisis where spectacle matters over actual debate.

The dumbest moment of last night’s debate was Chuck Todd demanding a "one-word answer" on our greatest geopolitical threat, hassling candidates who tried to expound, praising it as "the best part of a debate like this," then moving on with no followups. mediamatters.org/blog/2019/06/2…
Todd could have done an immense service by digging in deeper to these different answers, getting the candidates to explain why they picked the threats that they did. But... he just decided not to?
Notably four candidates said they viewed China as the nation's greatest geopolitical threat, a subject that received literally no attention from the moderators the remainder of the night. Maybe take the hint?

I've been trying to put into words something that I think we all shared... when our President said "The Americans are here", somewhere in our spirits, we united with past, present and future... The Americans are here, and this time, WE are those Americans, here to save ourselves.
2) We have sadly experienced casualties, some of whom we may never hear about. Others, we know, and we mourn the losses- civilians who died because our government refused to protect them, officers who were killed in the line of duty, military who fought battles, whistleblowers...
3) We have been harmed financially, spiritually, physically and emotionally, when they weaponized our agencies and people against us, when they created destructive policies to steal our jobs, homes, and health. We were denied benefits, we were wronged. We had no justice.

#History/#Art thread – From my recent trip to Madurai/Tirunelveli. On Jain sites (some with a rich history dating back to at least the 3rd cent. BCE), early Pandyan rock-cut cave temples (7th-8th cent. CE) & the amazing Vettuvan koil.

Before I start on the places, the history around all this is fascinating & splits opinion. Is it apt to call the script Tamili/Tamil Brahmi? Did it develop independently in the Tamil country/come with the Jain monks from the north? Were 8,000 Jains actually impaled in Madurai?>

In case there's anyone who is still somehow unaware, back in January Johann Hari released his new book about depression and how it 'really' works and can be cured, accompanied with a gargantuan publicity campaign and many endorsements.
