Tests of whether a developer-facing library API is any good:

1) You can follow a step-by-step tutorial one day, then the next day go through the same workflow from memory, without looking up any docs
2) The code written using your API by people with 1-2 weeks of experience with it (not you, not experts) looks pretty and idiomatic
3) You frequently come across implementations for use cases *you never anticipated*, that you didn't even know your API could do
4) Complex (>10 files) projects written with your API by average developers remain as readable as single-file scripts

We should not look at such closure orders as a sign of the end times.

These are *positive* developments. It means there are adults in charge willing to take appropriate measures that will be effective at slowing down the spread of the virus.
The US should take similar action right now. Note that the Europe travel ban does not qualify as an appropriately ambitious measure; it will be entirely ineffective. It amounts to political pandering.
Close the schools, ban all gatherings, order anyone who can to work from home.

I often hear "ideas don't matter, it's all about execution". How course ideas (the quality of your decision making) do matter -- it's just that the *initial idea* only represents a tiny fraction of your product. A product is made of thousands of ideas aggregated over many years.
You could build 100 different products from the same initial ideas, and perhaps only 10 would be successful. The difference between them would still be the *ideas* that went into them! Just not the very first one.
This is highlighted by the fact that successful products are almost never "executions" of their initial idea. They evolved from that starting point, into a form that is often unrecognizable. Aggregating ideas over time = changing direction

One of the worst take I hear constantly is, "technology is neutral, neither good or evil, it's just a tool".

The design of a tech product -- algorithms, interfaces -- modulates who it will empower and who it won't. It alters prior power dynamics.
The thousands of choices that go into a tech product define what can be done with it, who has access to it, what incentives it creates, etc.

If it has an impact, then this impact has a moral direction. If it's "neutral", it probably doesn't actually do anything.
Whenever I hear "it's just a tool", I know that person has never thought about what it *means* to have an impact on the world...

Over the last few years I’ve seen a depressing and terrible pattern emerge. People I know are smart act like crazy lunatics and idiots for their own benefit.

Makes them closer to the BJP ecosystem, gets them media coverage and gets them retweets from the Bhakt ecosystem... 1/n
I know Ministers and CMs who are decent people in person, but turn into worse than trolls on Twitter and when the cameras roll.

Several TV panelists I’ve met over the years don’t believe in the venom they spew. They tweet based on RT potential in ecosystem, not belief... 2/n
Some of these people are colleagues, some friends and some acquaintances. I won’t name anyone, but this phenomenon is just disturbing!

I’ve never engaged in a debate, because I know they won’t answer anything rationally. They’ve made a concerted decision to disregard facts! 3/n

The ultimate cause of all strife and misfortune in the lives of us as a species today is forgetting that one day we will all die. The notion of death is seen as taboo, something too hurtful and too personal to talk about in everyday conversation.
There is nothing else more scary to each and every one of us than coming to the terms that there will be a day where we cease breathing. We each first came across this realization in our youth, and equally frightening it is then, as it is now.
Death was fated to each and every one of our ancestors, and it is something that we'll have to one day go through ourselves.
