When I was a full-time employee, I had daily/weekly/monthly/yearly goals. I would have plans on how to meet them, and anything unexpected was almost always undesirable.

Nowadays, it’s the opposite. Almost everything important comes from random unexpected events and encounters.
When you’re on a tight plan, there’s a very narrow path to success. Random distractions are more likely to hinder you than help you fulfill your plan.

But when you have ample free time, random distractions start looking like unlimited upside for a very small bounded cost.
This has been one of the things that surprised me most ever since my professional life lost a lot of its structure.

Before, I used to hate the sound of notifications. Nowadays, I look forward to them! They’re the sound of (almost) free options.
