The story I left behind at @usatoday: The Justice Department is investigating whether famed DEA agent Enrique Camarena, who was kidnapped and murdered in Mexico in the 1980s, was first betrayed by people within the U.S. government ->

usatoday.com/in-depth/news/…
@USATODAY The inquiry inserts DOJ into a chapter of the 1980s drug war that the government had long dismissed as a myth – claims that the U.S. entangled itself with drug traffickers as the Reagan administration illegally armed rebels fighting Nicaragua's socialist government.
@USATODAY Agents and prosecutors have obtained statements from witnesses implicating a CIA operative and a DEA official in the plot to torture and murder DEA agent Enrique Camarena, according to the witnesses, Camarena’s widow and others familiar with the case.

usatoday.com/in-depth/news/…
@USATODAY The probe started because a court threw out the convictions of two other men for participating in Camarena's murder because of bogus FBI claims about matching their hair to the crime scene. DOJ considered re-trying both men, and re-interviewed witnesses, but decided not to.
@USATODAY Authorities are trying to corroborate the witness' claims that U.S. officials were involved in Camarena's death. But they trusted them enough that DOJ suggested it was willing to put them on the witness stand to re-try two other men convicted for his murder.
