Traditionally, primary candidates don't name a running mate until their nomination is a lock. This makes sense in a multiparty race, when running mate choice may be a bargaining chip at a potentially contested convention.

But when it comes down to only two nominees, one of whom is certain to enter the convention with a clear majority, there's no reason not to create a ticket now.

That's especially the case when the two finalists are 77 and 78 years old, and one of them has suffered a heart attack that, statistically, gives him a median life expectancy of just 3.1 years.

3.1 years.

It's not nice to think about, but there's a strong possibility that the nominee will be lucky to survive his first term, let alone be strong enough to seek a second. The issues we face as a nation are too important to just keep our fingers crossed and hope they beat the odds.

Democratic primary voters aren't just choosing one president; they may be choosing two. It's important that we know who the backup is before we're required to cast our votes.

So let's set aside tradition. We need to know who each candidate's VP choice is, NOW.
