Um. Let me just respond to the idea that the it would somehow better if everyone got the coronavirus all at once.
This would be catastrophic for the obvious reason, that we have a fixed supply of healthcare, which would quickly be overrun, causing huge amounts of unneccesary death, suffering and social disintegration.
The very reason you want to *slow* transmission is so the healthcare system has the capacity to treat those who need treatment. Everyone getting it at the same time would be the opposite of that.

Just, food for though, I guess.

I’ve been trying very hard to use our platform to communicate the facts and science of where we are in this pandemic. We do not want to stoke panic, because, again the *individual* risk remains low. Wash your hand. Have some canned food.

BUT
The news from Italy tonight clarifies just how enormous the systemic risk we’re facing is. And here’s the plain truth: Our federal government has failed and we are now, because of that failure, facing an enormous impending crisis. This is Katrina-level incompetence, if not worse.
Yesterday the President came out and admitted he is pressuring scientific and health experts to take steps that are worse for public health to artificially keep the numbers low.

This is sociopathic governance.

I keep hammering this home, but in my conversations with experts, the way to think about all this is *systemic risk* much more than individual risk to any given person in any given location. Here's an example.
Given auto-fatality rates, if you decided to drive around for a week without a seat belt (which you shouldn't do!), the odds that you *individually* would die in a crash would be quite elevated but still remain, numerically, quite low.
But from the standpoint of governments, when you've got millions of people on the road every day, that would add up to many, many unneccesary deaths! That's why we have seatbelt rules. It's why we have fire codes and a whole bunch of other safety regulations.

Tweets like this make it seem more and more like the inadequate testing has been an intentional strategy to keep the numbers artificially low.
Additionally Trump's riff about all the cases that don't require hospitalization on Hannity last night, makes me think he really wants to make sure thise cases aren't ever identified so he can keep the numbers low.
The problem, of course, is that while it's absolutely true that a large majority of cases probably will not require intensive medical treatment or hospitalization, sub-clinical cases CAN STILL TRANSMIT THE VIRUS. Which is why you need to know who has it!

A ‘science’ (fiction) writer’s take on #coronavirus - thread.
I’ve been following this since mid January and the first science news about it, from personal (health issues) and professional interest as I’ve been researching viruses 4 second novel. I’ve glanced at the crazy stuff/
If only to get the social reactions to it, but mostly I’ve been looking at in-depth science-informed threads and links (tip: look under ‘top commentary’ on news threads) as an interested amateur, and saw this coming but this is my (evolving) overview:
1. Take it seriously but do not panic. It’s slightly less infectious than flu but a bit more deadly, though more for high risk groups. (See point 5.)
2. Listen to scientists and public health bodies. (Shame certain govs did not act sooner, but good plans getting into place now.)

1st, central banks should develop a facility to assure that credit is not cut off to key sectors of the economy, come what may. Steadily available credit is much more important than lower-priced credit.
2nd, as huge excess capacity at major global ports suggests, this is a moment for less-not more-interference w trade flows. Though it may go against @POTUS instincts, USA should lead global effort to reduce tariffs as a source of stimulus for duration of the health emergency.

Primeiro, as más notícias. O modelo que se mostra mais acurado sobre o início do surto estima que, até 25 de janeiro, 75.000 pessoas foram infectadas. Isso explica pq os casos tem subido à taxa de 3.000 por dia, totalizando 35.000 hoje. Fica pior! (2/n)

Essas 75.000 já infectaram outros. Além disso, muita gente não desenvolve sintomas. Por isso, infelizmente, o número de casos hospitalares ainda vai subir muito. Não deve explodir, mas o pico não deve acontecer até o final desse mês, no mínimo. Claro que espero estar errado (3/n)

2/ ...entire economies can stay afloat long after their balance sheets are used up too, as long as credit keeps flowing. Credit capacity for most of the developed world is mostly used up (it's why interest rates are negative in many places), but they're still afloat. Why?
3/ ...Because no event has yet triggered a reckoning that reveals the insolvency. (Again, banks can stay in biz for a long time after they're insolvent.) Markets clearly worry that #coronavirus might be such a trigger--Doug details the huge mkt moves this week in reaction to it.
