The jubilant Brexiteer responses to this thread are rather perplexing. No-one was suggesting or expecting EASA membership; industry WAS hoping the govt would seek some form of associatie/close membership; and felt the EU was willing to discuss 1/
That may have been naive position - but like the health bosses seeking to remain part of EU pandemic warning system EWRS, or the logistics/hauliers hoping the govt would seek a waiver for security declarations; or industry hoping UK will join PEM convention - they hoped /2
What is becoming clear across multiple fronts is that the divergence logic that @RaoulRuparel speaks of is now being taken to its logical conclusions; even indirect effect of ECJ (of the kind @StevePeers discusses in the EASA context) but also applied to the Patent Court /3
@RaoulRuparel @StevePeers I suspect that a lot of people - indeed a lot of small and medium-sized businesses - have not fully understood what this will mean. For supply chains, for border frictions, for VAT deferrals, for import costs and the marginal disadvantage they will find themselves in /4
@RaoulRuparel @StevePeers I also, fwiw, find it extraordinary how little the government is prepared a) to consult with affected industry and b) to explain what new arrangements will be put in place in an incredibly short space of time. /5
@RaoulRuparel @StevePeers As @cullasys of ADS says UK aerospace exports £34bn a year and wants - not unreasonably - "pragmatic arrangements that protect competitiveness and support future growth." /6
@RaoulRuparel @StevePeers @cullasys I'll be trying to find out what @grantshapps has in mind, other than trying to coax a bunch of British EASA staff back to expand the CAA, at presumably considerable cost. Will it brea ready by 2021? Is FAA on board with this? etc etc. /7
@RaoulRuparel @StevePeers @cullasys @grantshapps Because I note from @cullasys statement that the industry is "keen to understand the full details of their intentions" - which suggests to me that they really don't have much of a clue. Because industry takes time to understand new systems, build and implement them etc. /8
@RaoulRuparel @StevePeers @cullasys @grantshapps So rejoice in the freedom, the independence, the great glory of a BRITISH certification, for sure. But also also to what end? Where is the detail case for this - because industry is "disappointed" and clearly doesn't share the vision. It is not doomsterims to ask why. ENDS
