Given the huge mess we face trying sort out who deserves what kind of benefits as COVID-19 keeps people from working, this would be a great time to just implement a Pandemic Universal Basic Income.

Just give everyone who reports a loss of work income the same amount.
That's the stimulus plan.
Also, make all COVID-19 treatment free, freeze evictions and rent hikes, implement price controls to kill profiteering, and produce hand sanitizer etc as a public service.

No one should get this disease unnecessarily, go without treatment for it, or be driven into poverty by it.
I'm all in for pandemic socialism.

As the brittleness bubble becomes more obvious, more governments will attempt to mandate that insurance companies insure the uninsurable—paradoxically bringing closer the collapse of the bubble itself, as companies are driven more urgently to get out now.

When the downside is losing some insurance premium revenue and the upside is avoiding multiple catastrophic losses, the math for insurance abandonment (before governments start making these demands) is simple.
And, as more places become uninsurable, they also become less credit-worthy, less attractive to outside talent and investment, and ultimately less economically viable.

We have only seen the very edge.

A lot more is on it's way.

There's a convenient amnesia going around these days—a self-serving memory loss among the chattering classes (of both the Left and the Right) that while they downplayed and denied climate change, thousands of people were making real sacrifices to build awareness and push action.
That convenient amnesia is largely an effort to—now that the climate emergency is undeniable and recognizably all-important—re-center themselves, their constituencies and their own priorities as critical to the climate/sustainability debate they ignored for so long.
Vital to that amnesia is the claim that if they've only recently grasped the magnitude of the problem—and the upheavals it entails—it's because no one knew.

An almost Orwellian historical revision is underway, one that edits out the 50+ year struggle of sustainability advocates.

I keep seeing this article go around. It's the height of silliness, spending more effort on political attacks against "preppers" than discussion what you should do to prepare.

There's a good chance we'll end up like Wuhan with most of the population stuck at home for weeks, even a couple of months. So do the obvious thing and stock up on some canned food and medical supplies you can't do without, and read: ready.gov/kit
That's the practical persons guide to preparing. The SciAm op-ed was the "Young Comrades Guide to Socially Responsible Preparedness", the same suggestions, but colored by politics.

I don't find this unexpected. We had similar results in the study of SARS. Challenge with the virus after vaccination actually made the resulting disease worse. One theory is this may be due to an overactive immune response due to a cytokine storm.
What I find really troubling is doctors in China had to report this anonymously to avoid communist censorship. We are not getting the whole story here. Keep in mind we don't yet know how many cases this involves and we'll have to wait for more case studies in other countries.

Hi. I was on the @ForbesUnder30 list this year. I have heard a lot of critiques of the list and how intergenerational wealth/access plays a role in success, especially at a young age.

I think lists/stories like this should include people’s debt as well as wealth for context.
We should also include how people make use of government programs and resources to succeed relative to jobs created.

The roads we drive on? Didn’t build it.

The postal service that delivers products? Didn’t build it.

The huge tax break she’ll get this year? Didn’t earn it.
We should also talk about how much more expensive it is to be poor than well off.

The inability to buy thinks in bulk really reduces your marginal profit.

High interest rates on loans rather than loans from parents cuts into profits.

Being unbanked? Credit scores? Etc.
