VIDEO THREAD: Front Line Nature VLOG #2 - The Beast of Miyakojima. A first of its kind for me, the following thread takes you through the vicious eyewall and into the eye of #typhoon Lingling which passed right over Miyakojima island, Japan in September last year. The intro... /1
Miyakojima is a tiny spec in the Pacific ocean, a gorgeous sub tropical island surrounded by reefs but also rugged and wild. As a typhoon approaches the waves there can be phenomenal /2
I chased Lingling solo, it was tough. I landed there expecting to shoot a cat 1 and watched in amazement as it bombed out into a cat 4 - I had to adjust my plans to play it safe, opting to shoot from a solid hotel in town /3
The eye wall was sudden and vicous, at times a blinding whiteout of roaring wind and rain /4
It's hard to describe the feeling of being on a tiny dot of land in a vast ocean, looking up at the heavens in the clear eye of a powerful hurricane or typhoon. The eye wall towering in the distance as blue sky and sun shines down /5
Japan's Ryuku islands lie in "typhoon alley" an area which sees more tropical cyclones than anywhere else on Earth. They're built like fortresses and despite Lingling's ferocious power damage to buildings was thankfully light and superficial. Agriculture took a big hit tho /6
