The fact that emphasizing its point of known origin resulted in widespread acts of anti-Asian racism and muddied the waters on actual containment and prevention means we might think about not doing that with future outbreaks, even temporarily.

This is the thing that kills me (and might literally kill any number of us): the world is full of these nanoscale Rupert Murdochs who spotted this growing market of people who had been pried out of actual reality and made angry but tractable, and decided to find a way to cash in.
And while Rupert Murdoch can probably ride this whole thing out in a bunker or a yacht or a bunker with a yacht inside it, the Cernoviches of the world are stuck living in the world, among the people they've convinced to help make the world a worse place for everybody.
