In this crisis, state & local campaigns are having to change tactics on the fly. Here are a few things we’re seeing @runforsomething candidates & others do -- reply and tell me what else you’re trying, whether you’re working on a campaign or running yourself. /1
Candidates have stopped canvassing & holding/attending in-person events, & are transitioning all voter contact to phone calls & text messages. For folks who have staff & $$, that’s a little easier. For those without, well, it’s obviously a bit trickier. /2
Campaigns are moving money into even more digital ads, trying to reach voters where they’re at (which, right now, is at home & probably in front of a computer or cell phone.) /3
Candidates are chatting & connecting to voters in local community Facebook groups, on NextDoor, and through neighborhood list-servs. /4
Many candidates raise $$ by hosting events. Now they’re testing out virtual fundraisers -- that could look like group-video chats, Facebook Lives, Twitter/Instagram Q+As, or something else entirely. /5
They’re also still doing call time, ringing donors up and asking them to chip in. They’re wisely making sure not to bother anyone who might work in a first-responder role during this pandemic. (h/t our partners @emilyslist on that great advice!) /6
We’ve loved seeing the campaigns reinforce #StayHome messaging across their channels, modeling good behavior and showing leadership in this moment of crisis. /7
State & local elected officials are doing wellness checks -- they're calling some of their elderly and most vulnerable constituents to make sure they're doing okay & staying inside. (h/t @DLCC for that advice.) /8
If you’re running for office, working on a local campaign, or volunteering, what are you doing to keep your campaign momentum going? /8
Another great tactic: In states where it's an option, candidates are encouraging voters to sign up to vote-by-mail in November. Better safe than sorry. /9
Another suggestion: Reddit! Take a dip into the city or neighborhood subreddit, participate, and as moderators allow, do an AMA. /10
