14 YEARS AGO today, on March 16, 2006, @OritKwasman & I filed a federal civil rights lawsuit against @GeorgiaTech for free speech and religious liberty. It was our love of liberty and our love for GT that compelled us to do so: bit.ly/3d8Y6bk @AllianceDefends #freespeech
.@OritKwasman and I were GT students and realized this was a significant decision—one we made with much prayer and counsel—following years of censorship and condemnation from administrators and profs who pushed an extreme worldview and saw us as a threat to their thought monopoly
Our case against @GeorgiaTech led to a challenging 3-year battle in federal court in which we were ultimately victorious (Thanks @AllianceDefends)! 14 years later, we are still experiencing the rewards, even as we recognize that the battle to preserve our first freedom continues.
We'll always be grateful to @AllianceDefends who represented us with endurance and excellence and also became our lifelong friends, to everyone who prayed for and encouraged us, and most of all to God who strengthened us and continues to use the case for our good and His glory.
.@OritKwasman and I spoke earlier as we always do on this day. We wished each other "Happy Anniversary" and reflected on how our GT case changed our lives, strengthened our friendship, opened doors for influence, and informed our perspective and priorities all these years later.
Last week I was asked in an interview what is one of the biggest lessons I learned from the GT case. I responded, "I came to understand that ultimately I am accountable to an audience of One." Although we knew the law was on our side, victory wasn't guaranteed in a Court of Law.
...And even though we had tremendous support, at times it felt like we were losing in the Court of Public Opinion. As tough as that was, I was confident that God had called me to do this and that He would guide and honor that decision regardless of the earthly outcome.
There is still much work to be done within and beyond America's college campuses. We must continue to advocate for free speech in higher education, even as we must equip students to know and defend their beliefs with confidence and grace. #academicfreedom
As we reflect on our experience we are filled with gratitude and heartened by those leveraging their influence to advance this cause. THANKS for standing with us, then and now!
