Viruses are just like computer viruses. A virus is just a short code (a chemical code/DNA/RNA) which is powerless till it finds a host. Once it gets entry into host it can multiply and cause damage to the host, just like it does to computers.

If u know that a computer is infected with a virus you can prevent it's further spread by going offline. Same is true for humans, quarantine is the offline mode for humans.
Now fortunately for us Corona Virus isn't very smart. We know exactly what are it's entry points in human body. You just have to create a strong firewall at those entry points - mouth, eye and nose.
