A virus is a piece of RNA (or DNA) in a protein (or lipid) coat. These novel viruses often come from overcrowding bt humans and food-source animals. DNA/RNA can mutate and sometimes DNA/RNA an animal carries can swap some code. Then we're in trouble.

Your first line of defense is ALWAYS get the 'flu shot. If you're exposed to a novel virus whilst sick with 'flu, you could be in trouble. Get the 'flu shot every year.
Wash your hands A LOT. Wash them after touching door handles, shopping cart handles, public phones, etc. ANYTHING other people touch can carry a virus. (Among other things.)
DO NOT touch your face. As much as possible, avoid it. We touch our faces a lot more than we are aware of. Increase your awareness.
Use ALCOHOL wipes to clean things YOU touch a lot. I buy Germ-X brand through Amazon. Sam's Club carries them. Your computer, tablet, CELL PHONE, etc. DO NOT use "antibacterial" wipes or soaps.
Regularly wipe down all the surfaces you regularly touch with alcohol wipes. ONLY alcohol - not "antibacterial" products. Lots of science behind this. Alcohol kills just about everything. The things it doesn't kill are likely things you don't need to worry about.
Men, get your neckties cleaned regularly. They are... filthy. Periodically wipe your belts and belt buckles with alcohol wipes.
And we all need to wash our hands frequently throughout life.
IN GENERAL: DO NOT touch public bathroom hardware after washing your hands. Get a length of paper towel, tuck it under your arm, and use it to turn off, open the door, etc.
Breathe. Take in the beautiful sunset. Live your life. No one gets out of this alive. The greatest tragedy is an unlived life.
