There is one field where we need people who don't like having their jobs: that is in politics. Politics done right is a sacrifice. The best people don't want to be there, they want to get the job done and then go back to their normal lives. (A thread)
The best teachers and scientists HATE becoming admin, they want to be in their classrooms or labs. Tulakan yan. "Ikaw muna, nagsilbi na ako." Same with the best doctors. The best people generally hate bureaucracy they want to be on the execution end.
And in our country, where our parents told us "politics is dirty" and our bosses told us to "just avoid the government as much as possible", good and competent people wouldn't go into politics any more than we would eat a dirty ₱20 bill.
My own father who served in the executive and legislative branch in his 30 year career didn't want me to follow him. "Politics is a pigsty, you might not be a pig but who can tell under all that mud. There are easier careers."
Imagine any other field where such distrust and disdain would exist like this. We would have no Healthcare of the field of medicine was perceived this way. You know why we don't resent the high salaries doctors make? Because they serve us totally.
No one goes into medicine or science or the military for the money, they do it for the service. When called they make, undaunted, the sacrifice. We deserve leaders who will do the same. We should elect the best professionals: doctors, economists, activists, entrepreneurs.
We should elect teachers who want to get back to their classrooms. Engineers who want to get back to their labs. Lawyers who want to go back to the courtroom. Those compelled to serve not those who want power.
We deserve people who think "this is such shit. If I ran my class/business/law firm like this it would die. What can I do to fix this shit so I can head back to my real life after this is done?"
So much depends on who is head of state. Can they lead "primus inter pares" first among equals? The best dean's put their students first and insist the rest of the faculty do too. The best CEOs put customers and employees first.
I invested in 6 businesses and everyone from my partners, CEOS, and secretaries have the right to call me on my shit. I've asked for their forgiveness many times. It's a harrowing job but it gives me purpose and yes privilege.
But no one, NO ONE, resents the privileges that a great leader has. Your colleagues would INSIST you get COVID-19 tested first. They would defend you to high heavens even if you told them to ignore the haters and focus on the job.
We have many great leaders in the Philippines. It's just that none of them want to be in politics. Some of them are even in this current admin serving despite being hobbled by ineffective leadership. This, more than any volcano or pandemic, is holding us back.
Pray for your family during this time, pray for those you love, but please PLEASE pray for those you never met. Those who may think differently than you. Pray for the Philippines. And remember this for 2022. (End thread)
