Here’s something the old folks are quietly asking:

Is it worth going to the ICU?

What’s the post-ICU experience?

Compromised? Traumatized? Dead? Totally recovered and joyous?

When things get intense, people are going to self-triage.They need good information to decide with
What’s the age breakdown?

40-somethings? Mostly joyous?

80-somethings? Mostly regretful?

How good or bad is it to die at home with this disease?

How does palliative care work with this disease?

From replies below I get that a major tool in the ICU is the ventilator, which breathes for a patient.

Apparently most who are vented suffer from ARDS--Acute Respiratory Distress Syndrome. See its definition and the bottom line of it, next...
ARDS is a type of respiratory failure characterized by rapid onset of widespread inflammation in the lungs. Symptoms include shortness of breath, rapid breathing, and bluish skin coloration. *Among those who survive, a decreased quality of life is relatively common* --Wikipedia
So, it looks like ventilators save some lives, but what kind of rest-of-lives?
