This morning my elder sister sent a message in the family group saying, “Morning fam, le kwele gore Chuene Rogers is late?” And that has led to this confession: 37yrs ago my siblings and I did something.
We had an aunt who suffered from Narcolepsy. Obviously we didn’t know then what it was called, didn’t know that it was a disorder. We called her ‘Warra’(wa Papa). Warra talked a lot but would, mid convo, pass out. She’d pass out while eating, standing, etc. We thought it was funny
The most irritating thing was, she liked asking questions about TV shows we’d all be watching. We didn’t have the answers cos we’re all watching TOGETHER. On days we could explain, she’d doze off then 3min later, wake up and want to carry on from where she left off.
One day Dolly Parton & Kenny Rogers were singing. As usual Warra asked ‘who’s this man?’ We told her it’s Kenny Rogers but Warra being a sleepist heard Chuene Rogers instead. ‘Chuene Rogers!?!’ she exclaimed in delight, ‘Ke gore leina lešo ke le le golo, ebile re na le makgowa?’
We laughed but since we wanted to carry on watching TV instead of correcting her and going through the tedious explanation, we said ‘yes, we’re related, Warra’.
For years Warra would tell anyone willing to listen that Chuene Rogers was family. She died thinking Kenny was her white cousin. Now that Kenny Rogers has died, I hope and pray that Warra a sa mo phaphela ko pele.

Yes, the Chuene siblings are bad people.
Basically, I’ve lost an uncle in Kenny Rogers. The Chuene family is devastated.
