Before I was a parent, I traveled a lot. 35+ countries. Many of them poor and undeveloped.

I have to say, Americans have a pretty warped view of what hardship really is.

Sitting in a nice, warm place with plenty of food watching Netflix would be a dream holiday lots of places.
I’m not talking about the people facing real, potentially life-changing consequences from COVID-19 or the resulting shutdown.

I’m talking about the folks itching to break quarantine at others’ peril because the minor, short-term inconvenience is “too much”.

Jeez. Perspective.
And, lastly, for what it’s worth, some of the poorest places I’ve been have been the most communal.

Shanty towns in South Africa. Rural villages in Laos. Backwater places in India.

Poor people largely banding together to survive. Kindness amidst hardship.
For many Americans, crises bring out their best. Kindness, generosity, compassion, empathy. Caring for others above self.

For others though, man, talk about selfish, sheltered people who neither know how good they have it nor care that others have it worse. Blech.
